TidalHealth Attracts Physicians Seeking a Quality of Life and Care on Delmarva

A native New Englander, Dr. Karin L. DiBari knew little about the Delmarva Peninsula before 2019, when she joined Salisbury, Maryland-based Peninsula Regional Medical Group, at that time part of Peninsula Regional Health System.

It did not take long for her to feel at home. “You can feel the work-life balance,” she says. “People love the outdoors, and they love the sunshine. They work hard and play hard, and that really resonated with me.”

Now DiBari is extolling Delmarva’s virtues to other physicians. She is president of TidalHealth Primary and Specialty Care, which was born from the merger of Peninsula Regional Medical Group and Seaford, Delaware-based Nanticoke Physician Network. The multispecialty physicians’ group was formed after Peninsula Regional Health System joined with Nanticoke Health Services.

Leading TidalHealth Primary and Specialty Care

Rebranded as TidalHealth, the system has two hospitals, including TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford and TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury.

A medical group affiliated with a health system offers several advantages. It is the front door to the health system: a first point of contact for many people beginning their healthcare journey with TidalHealth. A physician needn’t run a practice. There’s an economy of scale, and it ensures that there is a variety of specialists to meet the community’s needs.

“The hospital is the driver to make sure there is good talent in the area to provide quality care to patients,” she says. “We are codependent on each other.”

DiBari currently oversees 250 providers, up from 120 when she started. Her goal is to expand the group to up to 350.

“It’s a great place to raise a family, and there are lots of things to do. We’re attracting some highly qualified people because they just want a good quality of life and an area with a high quality of care.”

A graduate of The College of William & Mary and New York Medical College, DiBari is no stranger to recruitment and development. An OB/GYN specialist by training, she realized that her passion was leadership: she enjoyed making sure physicians had the tools and resources needed to do their job.

DiBari earned a master’s in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University and spent three years as chief medical officer and medical director of the Western Region of the Corning Hospital, part of the Guthrie Clinic, a four-hospital multispecialty group. She’s also held clinical leadership roles in the Southern New Hampshire Health System.

Dr. Karin DiBari Says Community Appeals to Physicians Who Want Balance

Western Sussex County, Delaware, and the Eastern Shore attract healthcare providers who appreciate the family-friendly communities, she says.

“It’s a great place to raise a family, and there are lots of things to do. We’re attracting some highly qualified people because they just want a good quality of life and an area with a high quality of care. You can still practice at the top of your license because you’re supported by all the clinicians and specialties.”

By growing the physician network, she will interest more providers. “Doctors want to work with other highly qualified doctors,” she maintains. In 2021, TidalHealth has received more than 30 clinical achievement recognitions from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.

She’s looking for medical assistants and other office staff. With some physicians nearing retirement age, she also seeks general surgeons. Soon, TidalHealth will expand medical services, including cardiology and ophthalmology, in the rapidly growing Millsboro, Delaware, area and will need providers and staff.

When becoming TidalHealth, the leadership kept the community at the top of the values list, in part because TidalHealth Nanticoke had such a rich history of serving the area. Says DiBari, “They are open to serving everybody — it’s purely about the patient.”
