Beebe Program Offers Innovative Cardiovascular Care in Southern Delaware

Beebe’s Structural Heart Program Marks Key Milestones, Demonstrating Innovative Cardiovascular Care in Southern Delaware

Beebe’s first Amulet patient Margaret Erner with Marcelle Brady, RN, Jordana Bumgarner, RTR, Annie Villalobos, MSN, Tammy Kelly, RN, Donna Fleitz, RN, and Mouhanad Freih, MD.

LEWES, DEL. – Beebe Healthcare’s Cardiovascular team recently celebrated two milestone procedures that provide the latest, most advanced care for patients in Southern Delaware.

The healthcare system continues to look for innovative technologies, devices, and procedures to provide the best care for Sussex County – most recently launching use of the Amulet device and completing the 200th Watchman device implant in the cath lab. Both are Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) devices, used to treat patients who have been diagnosed with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

“Both the Watchman and the Amulet are powerful assets in our arsenal of tools to prevent stroke,” said Annie Villalobos, MSN, APRN, AGCNS-BC, Structural Heart Program Coordinator and Clinical Nurse Specialist. “Decisions about which device is best for each patient are made based on what the imaging shows us, and how the patient’s anatomy is structured. The availability of Amulet gives us new options to ensure complete closure of the left atrial appendage and signifies Beebe’s commitment to having the right systems in place to care for every unique patient.”

Atrial fibrillation is a heart rhythm disorder that increases risk for stroke and requires that many patients rely on anticoagulation medications, long-term. The introduction of the Amulet, and continued successful use of the Watchman, offers patients new, life-changing options. The two devices are similar in that they are both used to close openings between the left atrium and the appendage. What varies is their shape and size. Having both options means Beebe’s structural heart team can more effectively treat patients with left atrial openings that vary in depth and size.

Beebe introduced use of the Watchman device in 2018. The first patient to receive the Amulet device implantation was in December 2023.

Watchman team Annie Villalobos, MSN, Mouhanad Freih, MD, Lori Kline, RN, Bob Henchy, Boston Scientific, Georges Dahr, MD, Paul Peet, MD, Alberto Rosa, MD and Ehtasham Qureshi, MD.

Beebe’s Structural Heart Program is led by Mouhanad Freih, MD, who serves as Medical Director, and Ehtasham Qureshi, MD, Chief of Cardiology, along with Villalobos. Electrophysiologists Michael Sabadish, MD, and Maria Pia Del Corral, MD, have also played an instrumental role in the growth of the program, and Beebe’s ability to introduce the Amulet device. A special thanks also to Georges Dahr, MD, and Jillian Dashiell, MD, as the intraprocedural transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) imaging specialists for LAAC.

Additionally, collaboration with Beebe’s cardiovascular surgeons, operating room team, and catheterization lab team is essential in the delivery of comprehensive, quality-centric, outcomes-based care for every patient.

“We are incredibly proud of our team and appreciate the tremendous amount of time, energy, and passion that has gone into bringing these lifesaving devices to Beebe, and perfecting our practices for the benefit of the patients we serve,” said Tracy Belcher, BSN, RN, NE-BC, CCRP, LSSGB, Director of Cardiovascular Operations and Outpatient Infusion Center at Beebe Healthcare. “The need for state-of-the-art care that is also local and close to home is clear. Two hundred patients have now received the Watchman device, and now, with the introduction of the Amulet device, we can offer even more options for care that is customized to the individual. The very highest quality heart care is absolutely available, right here at Beebe.”

White Coat Ceremony Launches First-Ever Beebe Healthcare Residency Program

Beebe Healthcare Welcomes First-Ever Family Medicine Residents

White Coat Ceremony Marks Historic Moment in Sussex County Hospital System’s 107-Year History

LEWES, Delaware – The first four resident physicians in the first town of the first state donned Beebe Healthcare white coats for the first time on July 13 as the healthcare system celebrated the start of its Family Medicine Residency program with a ceremony at the Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing.

It was a historic moment in Beebe’s 107-year history.

“You can see the future of healthcare in Sussex County on days like this – Beebe Healthcare is growing its own physicians to serve the rapidly growing population of Sussex County,” said David A. Tam, MD, MBA, CPHE, FACHE, President & CEO, Beebe Healthcare. “Beebe is wholly invested in serving Sussex County and that means bringing more physicians to care for the people here.”

The R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education also welcomed its second cohort of medical students from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). These core clinical students will be doing rotations in Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Obstetrics, and Gynecology.

Undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education make up the three areas of the R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education at Beebe Healthcare. Thursday’s ceremony capped a multi-year journey that began in 2019.

“I’m so proud of everyone who has made this day possible here at Beebe and also the support from our community,” said Joyce Robert, MD, Founding Program Director for the Family Medicine Residency. “These resident physicians are so excited to be here and be a part of Team Beebe and the Sussex County community.”

  • Harrison Eckert, DO

  • Monica Javadian, MD

  • Sofia Perez Delgado, DO

  • Jacob Valvis, DO

Beebe’s first class of residents includes:

  • Harrison Eckert, DO, who is from Orefield, Pennsylvania and completed medical school at PCOM.
  • Monica Javadian, MD, who is from Aarhus, Denmark and Northern Virginia, and completed medical school at the American University of the Caribbean.
  • Sofia Perez Delgado, DO, who is from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and Tampa Bay, Florida, and also graduated from PCOM.
  • Jacob Valvis, DO, who is from Hockessin and Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from PCOM.

The residency program will give these physicians a place to call home as they fulfill their educational requirements and pursue invaluable experiential learning opportunities in the clinical environment.

In tandem, it will offer tremendous benefits to the people of Sussex County who rely on Beebe for their care. Once fully staffed, the Family Medicine Residency will facilitate a minimum of 7,000 additional primary care appointments for our patients. This translates to increased access to timely care for people with a wide range of medical issues and needs.

“As a physician in this community for more than 25 years, I’m so proud to be a part of this monumental moment for Beebe Healthcare,” said Jeffrey Hawtof, MD, Director of Medical Education at Beebe Healthcare. “On average, 50 percent of medical residents choose to remain in the communities where they train, long-term. This creates a powerful system of continuity in care for those we serve, and who depend on primary care providers over the course of their lifetimes.”

Fisher’s Popcorn Growth Will Put Delaware Snack in More Grocery Stores Across United States

Major Expansion of Manufacturing and Wholesale Operations Planned in Frankford, Sussex County

WILMINGTON, Del. – Fisher’s Popcorn, which has produced hand-crafted gourmet popcorn in Delaware for 40 years, has chosen Frankford, Delaware, as the location for a new $4.85 million facility that will more than quadruple space for its manufacturing and wholesale operations.

The company’s current production facility in Fenwick Island, Delaware, is approximately 2,000 square feet, and the new 17-acre site on Delaware Route 20 just off the U.S. Route 113 corridor is almost 10,000 square feet. The additional space will allow Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware to utilize new equipment – including two kettles and a large packaging machine – that will increase production capacity many times over. For example, bag-packing capabilities will rise from eight bags per minute to 30 to 35 bags per minute.

Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware currently has 22 full-time employees staffing its manufacturing, retail, wholesale and e-commerce operations, all of which are in Sussex County. The company plans to create 20 additional wholesale jobs at the new site over the next three years.

Sussex County Economic Development Director William Pfaff; Delaware Prosperity Partnership Senior Manager, Business Development, Megan Kopistecki; Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware Vice President Russell Hall; and DPP Business Development Manager Bryan Mack collaborated on the Fisher’s Popcorn project.

“Fisher’s Popcorn has been a part of the Delaware beach experience and the Sussex County business community for 40 years, and we’re glad the company has chosen to expand here for its next phase of growth,” said Governor John Carney. “Delaware is a great place for manufacturing. This new facility will enable Fisher’s Popcorn to better serve its existing customers and grow its production and wholesale operations.”

Fisher’s Popcorn was founded in Ocean City, Maryland, in 1937, and a branch of the founder’s family began operating Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware independent from the original company in 1983. Still family-owned and -operated, Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware has retail shops in the resort towns of Fenwick Island, Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach. The company also sells its products online and in more than 2,000 grocery stores across the United States, including many Giant, Weis, Food Lion and Fresh Market locations.

Fisher’s Popcorn officials presented to Delaware’s Council on Development Finance an application for a Jobs Performance Grant of $60,000 and a Capital Expenditure Grant of $145,500 from the Delaware Strategic Fund to support the company’s investment in construction, fit-out costs and new equipment.

Distribution of grants from the Delaware Strategic Fund are dependent on the company meeting commitments as outlined to the CDF, which reviewed and approved Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware’s request for up to $205,500 in total grant funding.

“We’re very grateful for the opportunity to expand our operations while still being part of our local community here in Delaware,” said Vice President Russell Hall, who runs the company’s wholesale and e-commerce divisions. “This expansion will enable us to bring the classic flavors of the Delaware beach resorts to more people around the country while adding quality jobs in Sussex County. The grant assistance from the state is a key component to making this happen.”

Delaware Prosperity Partnership began helping Fisher’s Popcorn explore how it could continue to grow in Delaware’s retail in 2022. Providing additional assistance throughout the site search and other location processes was Bill Pfaff, director of economic development for Sussex County.

“We are so excited that Fisher’s Popcorn’s new manufacturing facility is calling Sussex County its home,” Pfaff said.

About Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware

Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware (fishers-popcorn.com) got its start in 1937, when Everett Fisher began making and selling copper kettle caramel popcorn on the Ocean City Boardwalk in Maryland. More than 40 years later, Everett’s granddaughter, Marty Fisher Hall, and her husband, Bill, opened the first Fisher’s Popcorn store in Delaware. Today – independent of the Maryland operations since 1983 – the Halls and their children run production and e-commerce operations and Fenwick Island, Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach retail locations along with a wholesale division launched in 2012. Each batch of Fisher’s Popcorn is still made now as it was in 1937, but a wide variety of flavors have been added, including Caramel with Peanuts, Butter-Flavored, White Cheddar, Old Bay®-Seasoned Caramel, Kettle Corn, Caramel Dusted with White Cheddar and the seasonal flavor Caramel Pumpkin Spice.

Nemours Children’s Health Receives $78M Gift to Fund New Cancer and Blood Disorder Initiatives

Presentation of $78 million gift from the Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation to Nemours Children’s Health.

Nemours Children’s Health Announces $78 Million Donation from the Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation

As one of the most significant donations ever made to a U.S. children’s hospital, this generous gift helps propel Nemours Children’s ongoing efforts to improve both the outcome and the experience of care for children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and other blood disorders.

Wilmington, DE – Nemours Children’s Health announced today a $78 million donation from the Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation of Wilmington, Delaware to fund new and innovative research programs and to dramatically expand Nemours Children’s capacity to provide clinical care for children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and other blood disorders. The announcement was made in the unfinished, fifth-floor shell space at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware that will now become a new inpatient unit to be known as the Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation Institute for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Nemours Children’s Health.

“I would like to express profound gratitude from all of Nemours to the Moseley Foundation for this generous gift to Delaware’s children. The new Moseley Foundation Institute will positively influence pediatric cancer and blood disorder care worldwide,” said Nemours Children’s Health President and CEO R. Lawrence Moss, MD. “Philanthropy of this magnitude allows us to transform our ability to improve the lives of children with cancer and blood disorders such as sickle cell disease. This gift will help us to provide better care and patient experience today, to conduct research that will improve tomorrow’s care, and to take concrete actions to ensure every child receives optimal care regardless of race or economic circumstances.”

“We are proud to partner with Nemours Children’s Health to champion innovative research and clinical care for kids with cancer and blood disorders,” said William J. Martin, Esq., President of the Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation. “Every child deserves the brightest future possible, and we are honored that Lisa’s legacy will allow Nemours to continue to make a profound impact on the children in Delaware and throughout the region, and in particular to help patients with diseases that have been long overlooked and underfunded, such as those afflicted with sickle cell disease.”

The $78 million gift, payable over 10 years, will allow Nemours to further its existing world-class capabilities and services to support and improve the health of Delaware’s children, which is aligned with Alfred I. duPont’s philanthropic vision and the funding of the Alfred I. duPont Charitable Trust.

Every dollar of the $78 million donation will be used to make immediate and long-term impacts on pediatric cancer and blood disorder treatment and research. The new initiatives include:

  • Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation Institute for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Nemours Children’s Health: The state-of-the-art, family-oriented Moseley Foundation Institute will accommodate the growing number of children seeking Nemours’ care, together with their siblings and parents. Along with the addition of 48 inpatient beds, the new space will feature isolation areas to protect immunocompromised patients, a dedicated medication room, expanded comprehensive clinic and infusion room capacity, and supportive care services. The center will overlook the beautiful gardens of Nemours Estate, with extraordinary views and design that promotes healing and recovery.
  • Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation Presidential Endowed Chair for Institute Director: A Presidential Endowed Chair will be named to support the inaugural Moseley Foundation Institute director’s work in pediatric patient care, research and other high priority areas.
  • Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation Endowed Chair for Sickle Cell Disease: In 2021, Nemours received a $10.5 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to support the Delaware Comprehensive Sickle Cell Research Program. The five-year award from the NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) supports clinical, translational, and psychosocial research in sickle cell disease. The Moseley Foundation Endowed Chair for Sickle Cell Disease will further this work by conducting and overseeing sickle cell disease research and clinical care. The chair will also focus on reducing disparities in access to care since this disease disproportionately impacts minority communities.
  • Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation Institute Endowed Laureate Program: The Moseley Foundation Institute will create an annual research goal Request for Proposals (RFP) focused on cancer and blood disorders research. A Scientific Review Board convened by the Moseley Foundation Institute will review these proposals, with a focus on engaging and funding leading global research teams from a variety of disciplines both inside and outside of traditional laboratory research.
  • Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation International Symposium: The symposium, to be held every other year, will showcase the Moseley Foundation Institute’s researchers’ accomplishments, and allow top international researchers and scholars to learn from and collaborate with one another to improve care.

“Progress in the care and outcomes for children with cancer and blood disorders has been dependent on innovative research,” said Edward Anders Kolb, MD, Director of the Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation Institute for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Nemours Children’s Health. “Nemours is committed to developing new treatment options to promote better outcomes for pediatric patients and their families. This momentous gift will allow Nemours to further improve our facility and bring together the best and brightest minds dedicated to this cause.”

Nemours Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (NCCBD) is a leader in cancer and blood disorder care and has achieved many accolades since its inception 30 years ago, including, but not limited to:

  • Developing two fully accredited transplant and cellular therapy programs supporting children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and other blood disorders;
  • Securing the designation as a National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program, ranked second nationwide in enrolling children in NCI-funded trials;
  • Achieving a three-fold increase in the number of patients identified to have cancer predisposition syndrome by Nemours’ Cancer Genetics Program. This program provides fully integrated and advanced molecular diagnostics for children with a personal or family history of cancer.
  • Conducting active Nemours investigator-initiated research projects in sickle cell disease that focus on novel diagnostic tools, research approaches, and intervention strategies to mitigate the effects of racism and stigma on disease management.

ChristianaCare Earns Transformational Leadership Award

Randy Gaboriault, ChristianaCare’s chief digital and information officer and senior vice president, accepts the award.

ChristianaCare Earns Transformational Leadership Award from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and American Hospital Association

(WILMINGTON, Del) – ChristianaCare has earned the Transformational Leadership Award for excelling in its development and deployment of transformational information technology that improves the delivery of care and streamlines administrative services.

Presented by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the American Hospital Association, the award is jointly bestowed to Janice Nevin, M.D., MPH, ChristianaCare’s president and CEO, and Randy Gaboriault, MS, MBA, ChristianaCare’s chief digital and information officer and senior vice president.

“Their trailblazing commitment to rapid transformation has set an example for the entire industry in how to pursue a leadership vision with determination, brilliant planning and courage to overcome all challenges,” said CHIME President and CEO Russell P. Branzell.

Under the leadership of Nevin and Gaboriault, ChristianaCare has created and deployed new organizational, digital capabilities for both patient and caregiver. Using voice-enabled technology, ChristianaCare HomeHealth patients can interact with an internally developed Alexa capability to guide them through their personalized daily therapy regimens. Similarly, ChristianaCare recently launched the ability for in-house postpartum patients to use an Amazon Echo device to ask questions, request help or communicate with their care team. Taking voice and digital capabilities further, in February 2022, ChristianaCare deployed an innovative tool called Moxi, a collaborative robot – or “cobot” – that can assist in the hospital by making deliveries and performing other non-clinical tasks so that nurses and other clinical caregivers can spend more time focused on what they do best: caring for patients.

“Randy is a phenomenal leader, with a relentless focus on creating a culture of innovation for impact, solving for the most complex problems and delivering significantly improved outcomes,” Nevin said. “His work has made ChristianaCare a model for how transformative technology can help to create health so that every person can flourish.”

ChristianaCare continues to be recognized for leading innovation in the health care industry. The organization was recently recognized by CHIME’s Most Wired program with Performance Excellence Awards in its acute and ambulatory categories. That level is reserved only for organizations that are considered leaders in health care technology who “actively push the industry forward” and are “realizing meaningful outcomes, including improved quality of care, improved patient experience, reduced costs and broader patient access to healthcare services.”

“Under Dr. Nevin’s extraordinary leadership, we have made an intentional commitment to placing technology at the center of all our initiatives to enable our caregivers to best serve our patients,” Gaboriault said. “That commitment, reinforced by our organization’s core behavior to continuously look for new ways to innovate, means that we are able to introduce and leverage robotic nursing assistants in a way that drives meaningful value for both patients and providers. And because our caregivers embrace change, we are confident that we will be using our cobots to assume more tasks in the future, and enable our nurses to devote even more of their precious time to direct patient care.”

About ChristianaCare

Headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, ChristianaCare is one of the country’s most dynamic health care organizations, centered on improving health outcomes, making high-quality care more accessible and lowering health care costs. ChristianaCare includes an extensive network of primary care and outpatient services, home health care, urgent care centers, three hospitals (1,430 beds), a freestanding emergency department, a Level I trauma center and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, a comprehensive stroke center and regional centers of excellence in heart and vascular care, cancer care and women’s health. Beebe Healthcare’s Dr. David Tam is DBT Large Nonprofit CEO of the Year

Beebe Healthcare’s President & CEO Dr. David Tam Named Delaware Business Times CEO of the Year

LEWES (May 16, 2022) – David A. Tam, MD, MBA, CPHE, FACHE, President & CEO, Beebe Healthcare, has been named Delaware Business Times CEO of the Year in the Large Nonprofit category.

Dr. Tam will be honored at a July 14 charity golf outing, dinner and awards presentation at Deerfield Golf Club in Newark.

“On behalf of the Board, congratulations to Dr. Tam for being recognized as CEO of the Year,” said Terry Megee, Board Chair, Beebe Healthcare Board of Directors. “Dr. Tam is an incredible leader. He is passionate, caring, empathetic, and truly lives Beebe’s Values. We have full confidence in him to lead this next phase of continued growth and excellent quality care for Beebe in Sussex County.”

This March, Dr. Tam entered his third year at the helm of Beebe Healthcare after arriving as the COVID-19 pandemic came to Delaware. While the bulk of the early demands as CEO of a not-for-profit independent community health system revolved around COVID-19, Dr. Tam’s and Beebe’s focus have shifted toward being the healthcare provider of choice for Sussex County.

“I’m incredibly honored to be selected for this award among the many great leaders throughout Delaware,” Dr. Tam said. “This recognition would not be possible without the dedication and passion of the Board of Directors, Executive Staff, leadership, Medical Staff and every member of Team Beebe. While I’m thankful, there is still much work to do for the people of Sussex County and those who visit and work here. Beebe is focused on growing access to care across the spectrum of services and people in Sussex County.”

Beebe has added more than 100 physicians and providers in the last two years with a continued emphasis on growing with Sussex County. These providers include wide range of specialties from hospitalist to primary care and surgeons. Beebe’s pursuit to provide the best healthcare in Sussex County does not end with growing its award-winning Medical Staff.

The Specialty Surgical Hospital on the Rehoboth Health Campus opens May 16 for its first patient, who is having an orthopedic procedure. The Surgical Hospital will provide top quality care and experience in a space dedicated to planned, short-stay and outpatient procedures.

As the Specialty Surgical Hospital nears its open, Beebe continues to receive incredible community support. The Beebe Medical Foundation received three-year restricted grant of $370,000 from the Carl M. Freeman Foundation to help fund the purchase of a new Beebe Healthcare Mobile Health Clinic that will serve Sussex County. The mobile unit and Beebe’s dedicated team will be able to offer individuals and communities in need a low-barrier access point to integrated treatment, programs, and services.

“You can see the dedication of Team Beebe as we focus on healthcare from all angles in Sussex County for all people because Sussex County is Our Specialty,” Dr. Tam said. “We have been serving the community for more than 100 years, and I’m very excited for the future of healthcare in Sussex County in the coming years.”

Beebe Healthcare is a not-for-profit community healthcare system with a charitable mission to encourage healthy living, prevent illness, and restore optimal health for the people who live in, work in, and visit the communities we serve. Beebe Healthcare has three campuses: the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus, which houses the medical center; the Rehoboth Health Campus; and the South Coastal Health Campus. Beebe Healthcare offers primary care as well as specialized services in the areas of cardiovascular, oncology, orthopaedics, general surgery, robotic surgery and women’s health. Beebe also offers walk-in care, lab, imaging and physical rehabilitation services at several locations throughout Sussex County, in addition to a home health program and a comprehensive community health program.

Georgette Lang On Why She Chose Delaware

Georgette Lang had the opportunity to travel to and live in various states across the country: Louisiana is where she was raised and received her undergraduate degree, and she traveled to Texas to receive her doctorate in chemistry. But even after her time spent in these states, she chose to move to Delaware. In 2018, Lang was approached by the chemical company Adesis with a job offer. The opportunity to work for a company dedicated to helping other businesses solve issues through chemical solutions was an offer Lang could not refuse, as she would be working in Delaware with some of the country’s best chemists. Her move to Delaware was largely prompted by this opportunity, but there were more factors at play influencing Lang’s choice to settle in the First State.

“My name is Georgette, and I’m a chemist at Adesis. I was born in Louisiana, and I did grad school at Texas A&M. I was there for about eight years.

I talked to a recruiter, and he said, “What do you think about moving to Delaware?” And I said, “Awesome, that’s great! Let’s try that out.” And so I’ve been here since April of 2018.

Living here is great. We really like to go to historic New Castle and, you know, throw the ball with our dog and take her for walks. One of the best things has been the seasons. We get to experience outside in all different weather. In the south, it’s very hot in the summer. You can have like 100 days of 100 degree weather. So in the winter, you can just suit up and go out and play. In the summer, you can go to the beach, you can go out by the river, you can do lots of stuff like that.

My fiance is a chemist as well. Luckily he was able to come work at Adesis. But, if not, there was plenty of other opportunities for him here or even in Philly. We have a few people who commute. But being a chemist there’s lots of opportunities here.

Delaware Is a Great Place to Build a Home

Not only is Delaware home to some of the most highly regarded and successful businesses in the country, but it is a great place to build a home.
