Initiatives to Promote Delaware’s Employee Wellness and Work-Life Balance

Driven by a shifting demographic landscape in the workplace, practices that foster wellness and work-life balance have emerged as pivotal to attracting and retaining talent. Delaware, which was ranked the #1 state for working from home in 2023 by WalletHub, sees its large employers and public policies continually encouraging a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal life. By prioritizing wellness and work-life balance, companies and leaders in Delaware employee wellness initiatives are not only enhancing the quality of life for its residents but also establishing a model for other states to follow.

Innovative Employee Wellness Initiatives in the Workplace

CSC, consistently recognized by the Delaware News Journal as one of the top workplaces since 2007, provides corporate services to businesses globally, including over 90% of the Fortune 500 companies. Located in downtown Wilmington, CSC is committed to promoting work-life balance among its approximately 1,350 employees through both traditional means – such as paid time-off, healthcare benefits, and bonuses – and innovative approaches. These include flexible schedules, remote work options, tuition assistance, on-site fitness facilities, health and wellness days, and mental health support services. Additionally, the CSC Gives Back program matches employee charitable contributions, fostering employee engagement with local organizations and strengthening community ties. In 2022 alone, CSC matched over $130,000 in donations to charity, with 58% directed towards organizations supporting social well-being.

Perdue Farms, a family-owned poultry processer with around 5,780 employees in Delaware and one of the largest employers in the state, has garnered recognition for its workplace environment. Forbes named the company one of Delaware’s Best Employers in 2019, and the Maryland Department of Health awarded it a Gold Wellness at Work Award. These accolades are a testament to Perdue’s commitment to employee wellness, highlighted by the innovative Perdue HealthWorks. This comprehensive healthcare program provides associates and their dependents with affordable ($0 co-pay), quality care at on-site Wellness Centers, which offer treatment from headaches and allergies to women’s health and family planning. Plus, all Perdue Farms associates have the opportunity to receive their high school diploma through an accredited online curriculum at no cost as well as continue their education at the Perdue Learning University.

Public Policies Encouraging Delaware’s Employee Wellness and Work-Life Balance

Delaware’s commitment to promoting work-life balance and employee wellness extends beyond the business community. The Healthy Delaware Families Act, signed into law in 2022, paves the way for a Paid Family Leave program within the state. Although not in effect until 2026, Paid Family Leave fosters work-life balance by offering employees flexibility during critical life moments – whether it be welcoming a new child, caring for a sick family member, or addressing personal health concerns. As of 2024, only 12 other states and the District of Columbia have passed a paid family and medical leave program, underscoring Delaware’s support of balancing employee wellness with professional responsibilities.

The Lt. Governor’s Wellness Challenge stands as another testament to Delaware’s commitment to promoting healthy living. This initiative recognizes individuals, organizations, and institutions that not only champion wellness within their communities but also serve as inspirational figures for fellow Delawareans to emulate. An essential criterion for receiving a wellness leadership award is the ability to showcase tangible improvements in the accessibility of behavioral and physical health services throughout the state. By honoring those who strive to enhance the collective well-being, the Lt. Governor’s Wellness Challenge reflects an understanding in Delaware of the importance of fostering a culture that values engagement and wellness beyond the workplace.

Supporting Prosperity

As Delaware continues to emerge as a leader in fostering work-life balance and promoting employee wellness, it’s clear that both the private and public sectors play pivotal roles. From CSC’s innovative workplace policies to Perdue Farms’ comprehensive health care programs, Delaware’s companies are setting benchmarks for how to support employees’ well-being and personal growth. Meanwhile, state initiatives like the Healthy Delaware Families Act and the Lt. Governor’s Wellness Challenge showcase a governmental commitment to creating a supportive environment that values the health and happiness of its citizens. As Delaware continues this path, it reaffirms the importance of adopting holistic approaches to work and life, encouraging a future where well-being is at the forefront of every organization’s ethos.

Delaware’s Startup Ecosystem: Explore Delaware’s support system for startups, funding, mentorship, and networking

Innovation runs in Delaware’s DNA, dating back at least to the founding of the DuPont company in the early 1800s. Today, the startup ecosystem in Delaware continues to thrive, with support including funding, dedicated innovation spaces, and mentorship and networking opportunities. While not an exhaustive list of all resources for entrepreneurs, the following examples illustrate the collaborative community and active ecosystem that startups will experience in Delaware. Additional sources of support can be found on the Startup Resources page.

Funding for All Startup Stages

From pitch competitions to publicly-funded grants and everything in between, Delaware provides many resources for entrepreneurs to elevate their product or company to the next level. Startup 302 is an annual pitch competition sponsored by the Delaware Prosperity Partnership with a focus on supporting early-stage startups led by founders who are from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds, the LBGTQ+ community, or women. Prizes vary from $3,000 to $25,000 and are awarded as grants. Past winners include Rush Roto, an AI technology and photography company, and Resonate Forward, a medical device technology company, among other winners. TOVOIA

Another funding opportunity is the Encouraging Development, Growth and Expansion (EDGE) Grant, sponsored by Delaware’s Division of Small Business. This initiative provides competitive grants to qualified small businesses in Delaware, providing up to $100,000 for STEM-based companies and $50,000 for non-STEM entrepreneurs. Recent winners include Marin’s Med, a prosthetics innovation company in Sussex County, and All Azimuth Solutions, an advanced air mobility startup developing proprietary technology in Kent County.

Additionally, access to venture capital and seed funding in Delaware is also available. For example, Leading Edge Ventures based in the Delaware Technology Park provides seed and early-stage venture capital financing.  Leading Edge Ventures focuses on startups based in the Mid-Atlantic region operating in the information technology and medical device field, two industry sectors with extensive networks in Delaware.

Innovation Hubs & Spaces

All good ideas need a place to call home, and Delaware has numerous business parks and incubators dedicated to supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in the state. For example, the Delaware Technology Park (DTP) provides development-stage companies in the life sciences, information technology, advanced materials, and renewable energy industries with space, resources, and connections to accelerate their business in three locations near University of Delaware. Since its inception in 1992, more than 75 companies have located at DTP such as QPS, a biotech contract research organization, and Prelude Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical manufacturer.

Another facility that supports innovation and entrepreneurship in the life sciences is the aptly-named Innovation Space, with more than 130,000 square feet of state-of-the-art multi-use lab space. Located within the DuPont Experimental Station in northern Delaware, companies located at the Innovation Space benefit from safe, secure labs of various sizes designed to support biotechnology, chemistry, and materials science research. The Innovation Space also provides critical support elements including access to funding competitions and accelerator programs, encouraging dozens of startups like Versogen, a green hydrogen solution company, and Adesis, a contract manufacturing and development organization with a focus on clean tech.

Mentorship & Networking Opportunities

In a small state like Delaware, networking and mentorship opportunities live around every corner. For example, the Equitable Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (E3) is a membership cohort from the Pete du Pont Freedom Foundation aimed at supporting entrepreneurs with mentorship, connections, and collaboration. The top areas of focus include leadership coaching, marketing, ecosystem collaboration, human resources, and finance and accounting. Any stage entrepreneur is welcome to join E3 and benefit from participating in a network of like-minded individuals and potential partners.

Other key networking groups include Tech Forum and DelawareBio. Tech Forum provides resources for tech companies in the Delaware area, including presentations from thought leaders and networking events. Past events include discussions of robotics and the Blue Economy, AI, and cryptocurrency. DelawareBio promotes innovation in the life sciences in Delaware through policy research and advocacy, hosting events showcasing industry innovation, and collaborating with industry, academic, and government partners. Events range from monthly happy hours to day-long conferences focused on life sciences.

All This Plus More

Considering the wealth of funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities available to startups in Delaware, it is no wonder that the state is home to a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs across multiple sectors. More resources for funding, mentorship and networking can be found here, as well as information about incubators, accelerators, education programs, and more.

Beebe Healthcare’s Family Medicine Residency Program Selected for Exclusive Pilot Project

Beebe Healthcare Residency Program Selected for Special Society for Teachers of Family Medicine Project

Beebe Healthcare’s Wendi Schirvar, PhD, left, Ryan Arias, DO, Miri Shlomi, MD, Joyce Robert, MD, Tanya Ray, MS, Jeffrey Hawtof, MD, and Cynthia Lamour, DO, all of whom are affiliated with the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Sussex County Program 1 of 25 in U.S. Picked for Pilot Project

April 29, 2024

LEWES – Beebe Healthcare’s R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education is proud to announce that its Family Medicine Residency program is one of just 25 across the country that has been selected to participate in a special pilot project facilitated by the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM).

The project is designed to elevate the importance of competency-based medical education while integrating a more individualized and personalized approach to learning for medical residents.

“There is so much benefit in developing individualized learning plans for our residents, with consideration for each person’s special needs, strengths, and goals,” said Joyce Robert, MD, FAAFP, Program Director. “We are incredibly excited to be part of this project and to have the opportunity to lead the way and set an example for other residency programs to follow.”

In addition to implementing new hands-on approaches in the clinical training environment, the STFM program will put new technologies in the hands of residency program leaders, who will be spending more time on direct observation as they are working with clinical residents. The goal is to allow for real-time assessments in medical training environments. Additionally, the program promotes the importance of communication, teamwork, and leadership from a professional development standpoint, and work/life balance and wellness on a personal level.

“This project encourages us to look at what we are doing through a different lens and take a more holistic approach as we grow our people, and therefore our program,” said Dr. Robert. “It’s a chance to be at the forefront of positive change and we are excited to be part of it.”

Beebe’s Family Medicine Residency program welcomed it inaugural cohort of residents in summer 2023, and recently announced the second group of residents, who will come onboard this July. The program is led by Dr. Robert and Miri Shlomi, MD, Associate Program Director, both of whom will participate in a series of conferences sponsored by STFM, as Beebe adopts and implements its competency based medical education curriculum. They and their colleagues will have opportunities in the future to share their experiences and learned best practices through their activism in the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians (DAFP).

Recently, Dr. Robert was inducted as DAFP’s President-Elect and Ryan Arias, DO, primary care physician and faculty member within Beebe’s Family Medicine Residency program, was named DAFP Teacher of the Year.

“We have come a long way in a short period of time,” said Dr. Robert. “So many wonderful things are happening because our team is made up of a group of people who are passionate about the work, dedicated to doing things the right way, and committed to growing in a way that positions Beebe as a premier place to come for family medicine residency training.”

* * *

Earlier this year, Beebe’s Family Medicine Residency broke ground on a new clinic in Long Neck, the future site where present and future family medicine resident physicians will see and care for patients.

With this new facility, the Family Medicine Residency can continue to expand to serve a culturally diverse population in one of the fastest growing areas of Sussex County. With the full complement of residents, the doctors will be able to provide about 7,000 primary care appointments.

Celebrating the groundbreaking were Anthony Buonanno, MD, Paul Sierzenski, MD, Mike Meoli, Board Chair Tanya Ray, Beebe Medical Foundation President Tom Protack, Joyce Robert, MD, Jacob Valvis, DO, Lighthouse Construction CEO Megan Glick, Jeff Hawtof, MD, Harrison Eckert, DO, and Monica Javadian, MD.

“Access to primary care is one of our strategic pillars for the future of healthcare in Sussex County,” said Paul Sierzenski, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Physician Executive at Beebe Healthcare. “It is significant that Beebe is training our own physicians who could possibly stay in Sussex County. Many residents choose to stay where they completed their residency. It’s just one more way Beebe is addressing the community’s need for primary care.”

Beebe’s first four family medicine resident physicians started in July 2023. They have been seeing patients at the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus and at Beebe Primary Care Long Neck, which currently serves as the residency’s outpatient clinic. On March 15, the residency matched with four more physicians, who join Beebe this summer.

The office functions as a full-service primary care office, including seeing discharged patients, performing minor procedures, and offering women’s health services. The resident physicians accept patients of all ages.

“The new clinic seals Beebe’s residency program as a special offering for prospective residents and victory for access for Sussex Countians,” said Joyce Robert, MD, Program Director of Beebe’s Family Medicine Residency. “A recently renovated Shaw Building which houses the R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education – in combination with this new outpatient location – pairs Beebe’s clinical excellence with its 108-year legacy in an area that is rapidly growing and in need of primary care services.”

This would not be possible without the support of the philanthropy in the community, and a $1 million grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield’s donor-advised fund, BluePrints for the Community.

Beebe Healthcare is a not-for-profit community healthcare system with a charitable mission to encourage healthy living, prevent illness and restore optimal health for the people who live in, work in and visit the communities we serve. Beebe Healthcare has three campuses: the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus, which houses the medical center; the Rehoboth Health Campus; and the South Coastal Health Campus. Beebe Healthcare offers primary care as well as specialized services in the areas of cardiovascular, oncology, orthopaedics, general surgery, robotic surgery and women’s health. Beebe also offers walk-in care, lab, imaging and physical rehabilitation services at several locations throughout Sussex County, in addition to a home health program and a comprehensive community health program. Delaware says, ‘Hi Barbie!’ Bridgeville’s Frozen Farmer Teams with Mattel on Doll-Themed Treats

Bridgeville business creates Barbie popsicle with Mattel Inc.

By Krys’tal Griffin
Delaware News Journal

If you’re still not over the Barbie craze sparked by the release of the hit “Barbie” movie last summer, this new partnership between a Delaware business and Mattel Inc. is sure to keep Barbie a household name.

The Frozen Farmer, launched from the third-generation Evans Farm in Bridgeville in 2015, is a company striving to eliminate food waste by using the farm produce deemed “too ugly” for retail sale to create ice cream and sorbet.

The company was featured on ABC’s “Shark Tank” in 2020, winning an investment deal with Lori Greiner and eventually expanding the sale of its products to more than 5,000 stores nationwide.

Now, The Frozen Farmer is expanding its offerings to include Barbie Freezer Squeezers in partnership with Mattel Inc., the manufacturer of Barbie.

What are Barbie Freezer Squeezers?

Co-founder of The Frozen Farmer and native Delawarean Katey Evans created the popsicle-like treat as an homage to her personal connection to Barbie and all that the famous doll stands for.

“As a mom to four daughters, Barbie has a special place in our home as more than just a timeless toy that brings generations together,” Evans said. “From a young age, Barbie empowered me to chase my dreams as a female founder. It’s a full circle moment to be able to partner with Mattel to bring Barbie Freezer Squeezers to market with the Frozen Farmer, a brand that grew from the seeds of self-belief that Barbie planted early on.”

The frozen treats are available in a pink strawberry lemonade sorbet flavor and come in 3-ounce squeeze tubes to be easily enjoyed on the go.

Described by the company as a mix between tart and sweet, the new offering continues the Frozen Farmer’s mission to reduce food waste while providing classic flavors everyone can enjoy, and with a nod of approval from Barbie herself, who could pass up a taste?

“What started as a way to use produce that looks unique has become our mission — and the results are delicious,” Evans said. “Barbie is a brand that celebrates the differences of all children that make them uniquely themselves—and as a mom, I love that as much as my daughters love all things Barbie.”

Delaware Offers Tuition Incentive to Attract Certified Nurse Assistants

State of Delaware Offers Tuition Incentive To Attract Certified Nurse Assistants

DOVER, Del. — To address nurse staffing challenges impacting state-operated facilities, the State of Delaware is implementing an innovative tuition incentive program to enhance the recruitment of Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) in the state’s workforce starting December 1, 2023.

Following a public request for proposal process, Delaware’s Department of Human Resources has selected three agencies to train CNAs, with the State covering the tuition cost for CNA candidates of up to $3,000 per student. The three training facilities selected are: Bear Professional Institute, Inc, the Delaware Skills Center, and Sussex County Vocational Technical School District. The program provides a pathway for individuals with some nursing experience to obtain certification while securing employment with the state.

The State operates four healthcare facilities at the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and the Department of State (DOS), including the Delaware Psychiatric Center, the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill, the Delaware Veterans Home and Stockley Center. These facilities provide medical services to senior citizens, veterans, and residents with severe mental health and physical disabilities.

“With Delaware experiencing the same nurse staffing challenges as every other state, we are offering this first-ever tuition incentive to attract more state employees to serve as certified nurse assistants,” said Claire DeMatteis, Secretary of the Department of Human Resources. “With certified nurse assistant vacancy rates of 40-50% in our state-operated healthcare facilities, it puts additional pressure on licensed and registered nurses in these facilities. With this new tuition incentive, along with signing and retention incentives for all types of nurses in our state facilities, we are investing significant state resources for the health and well-being of some of our most vulnerable residents.”

Participants are required to commit to working with the state for two years following their certification. DHR is pursuing a similar tuition incentive plan for licensed practical nurses (LPNs).

“I work for the State of Delaware because it’s a dynamic organization with plenty of professional development opportunities, great health benefits and a family-oriented culture. The educational opportunities provided have given me the knowledge to better understand the residents and deliver quality care. With hard work and determination, you can advance your career while working for the state,” said Hannah Sackey, a dedicated CNA currently serving in the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill.”

Once certified, CNAs receive a state salary of $34,000 along with a comprehensive compensation package, which includes health benefits, retirement benefits, paid time off, learning and development opportunities, employee assistance programs, recognition programs, and employee discounts.

Interested individuals are encouraged to apply for current nursing assistant job opportunities (Job Code-UDCD01) at one of the four state-operated facilities through the Delaware Employment Link at https://statejobs.delaware.gov/. For questions, please contact Germaine Harris, Nurse Recruiting Manager at 302-255-9148 or Germaine.Harris@delaware.gov.

Fisher’s Popcorn Growth Will Put Delaware Snack in More Grocery Stores Across United States

Major Expansion of Manufacturing and Wholesale Operations Planned in Frankford, Sussex County

WILMINGTON, Del. – Fisher’s Popcorn, which has produced hand-crafted gourmet popcorn in Delaware for 40 years, has chosen Frankford, Delaware, as the location for a new $4.85 million facility that will more than quadruple space for its manufacturing and wholesale operations.

The company’s current production facility in Fenwick Island, Delaware, is approximately 2,000 square feet, and the new 17-acre site on Delaware Route 20 just off the U.S. Route 113 corridor is almost 10,000 square feet. The additional space will allow Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware to utilize new equipment – including two kettles and a large packaging machine – that will increase production capacity many times over. For example, bag-packing capabilities will rise from eight bags per minute to 30 to 35 bags per minute.

Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware currently has 22 full-time employees staffing its manufacturing, retail, wholesale and e-commerce operations, all of which are in Sussex County. The company plans to create 20 additional wholesale jobs at the new site over the next three years.

Sussex County Economic Development Director William Pfaff; Delaware Prosperity Partnership Senior Manager, Business Development, Megan Kopistecki; Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware Vice President Russell Hall; and DPP Business Development Manager Bryan Mack collaborated on the Fisher’s Popcorn project.

“Fisher’s Popcorn has been a part of the Delaware beach experience and the Sussex County business community for 40 years, and we’re glad the company has chosen to expand here for its next phase of growth,” said Governor John Carney. “Delaware is a great place for manufacturing. This new facility will enable Fisher’s Popcorn to better serve its existing customers and grow its production and wholesale operations.”

Fisher’s Popcorn was founded in Ocean City, Maryland, in 1937, and a branch of the founder’s family began operating Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware independent from the original company in 1983. Still family-owned and -operated, Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware has retail shops in the resort towns of Fenwick Island, Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach. The company also sells its products online and in more than 2,000 grocery stores across the United States, including many Giant, Weis, Food Lion and Fresh Market locations.

Fisher’s Popcorn officials presented to Delaware’s Council on Development Finance an application for a Jobs Performance Grant of $60,000 and a Capital Expenditure Grant of $145,500 from the Delaware Strategic Fund to support the company’s investment in construction, fit-out costs and new equipment.

Distribution of grants from the Delaware Strategic Fund are dependent on the company meeting commitments as outlined to the CDF, which reviewed and approved Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware’s request for up to $205,500 in total grant funding.

“We’re very grateful for the opportunity to expand our operations while still being part of our local community here in Delaware,” said Vice President Russell Hall, who runs the company’s wholesale and e-commerce divisions. “This expansion will enable us to bring the classic flavors of the Delaware beach resorts to more people around the country while adding quality jobs in Sussex County. The grant assistance from the state is a key component to making this happen.”

Delaware Prosperity Partnership began helping Fisher’s Popcorn explore how it could continue to grow in Delaware’s retail in 2022. Providing additional assistance throughout the site search and other location processes was Bill Pfaff, director of economic development for Sussex County.

“We are so excited that Fisher’s Popcorn’s new manufacturing facility is calling Sussex County its home,” Pfaff said.

About Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware

Fisher’s Popcorn of Delaware (fishers-popcorn.com) got its start in 1937, when Everett Fisher began making and selling copper kettle caramel popcorn on the Ocean City Boardwalk in Maryland. More than 40 years later, Everett’s granddaughter, Marty Fisher Hall, and her husband, Bill, opened the first Fisher’s Popcorn store in Delaware. Today – independent of the Maryland operations since 1983 – the Halls and their children run production and e-commerce operations and Fenwick Island, Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach retail locations along with a wholesale division launched in 2012. Each batch of Fisher’s Popcorn is still made now as it was in 1937, but a wide variety of flavors have been added, including Caramel with Peanuts, Butter-Flavored, White Cheddar, Old Bay®-Seasoned Caramel, Kettle Corn, Caramel Dusted with White Cheddar and the seasonal flavor Caramel Pumpkin Spice.
